In my GT4’s case, the worst of the rust in the trunk was caused by the... gas cap door.

See, with rain water and car washes, the water just pours in around the gas cap door perimeter. The only thing below is the top of the fender well. Which is flat. And, slightly dipped in the middle, forming a shallow pool to collect said water.

Now, with this pool of water, every acceleration, the pool splashes back. What’s to stop the water? The wall of the trunk of course. BUT, that trunk wall is attached to the fender well with a simple flange. Yes, that flange formed a nice trough at the trunk wall. And, eventually a nice series of holes after years of the exposure. That took a tremendous amount of time to carefully trim away and add new metal WITHOUT forming a water-collecting trough...

308 (maybe just GTS/B) rust zones:

Rear of the car, under the 38 levels of glass wool, insulation, wood, ½ inch carpet density pad (resistant to mold and mildew), and fiberglass just above the muffler.

So needed in the event you want to carry your vintage Ping driver golf clubs or Hershey chocolate bars in your suit case.

What causes the moisture?  A loose tail light assembly . . . or one that’s too tight and distorts the seal and just before the 3mm screw-stock drives itself into the tail light and cracks it.

The trunk is a low pressure area and driving in any (gasp – choke) wetness will draw the wetness in, past the tail lights and soak all the stuff packed in the frame spaces . . . which will provide plenty of moisture for the cheapo under body tin work and above the muffler and (gasp [yet again]) unseen tin worms.

Only way to buy a 308 is the way Rob did – start at ground zero and remake the car.  And $25k 1975 US $ today is about $125,000.  About even for a new 308 Dino.

Happy motoring.
