Having experienced one of each (mechanical failure and weather) in an older Mooney, I'll agree with Clyde that it's training that saves your ass in a life or death situation.

 De Vries was instrument rated and his passenger was a flight instructor. They were in one of the easiest (I.e., least demanding) planes to pilot. IMO they somehow were dealt a very bad hand.
