Peter, good point but a proper coating job and good (safe) tuning can get you there also if you're not going for the Gold in RWHP.

One key modification were oil sprayers to cool the undersides of the pistons (there were two rails that ran down both sides of the block edge and had little nozzles pointing up. They’d spray a fine mist of engine oil to cool the pistons. I don’t see or know of any tuner shop that adds this to turbo builds). Mind you, in some high boost mods, tuners will coat piston tops with some sort of ceramic coating for heat shielding.

It has been done - the F40 engine is based on the 308 block.  Not the least expensive path for sure.

Bowed in?  Where?  What picture?  I’d like to learn something. I don’t recall our ‘78 has any bowing.  Maybe so.
