Re: Twin-Turbocharged 1983 Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole for sale on BaT Auctions - ending December 22 (Lot #62, 108) | Bring a Trailer

Don’t get me wrong, the Coyote is a cool powerplant and my buddy had fun playing around with it in one of his (Mercury Capri – Fox-body gen) conversions, but it was overly complex. He ended up spinning one of the bearings and that was it. Cheaper just to chuck it.

If Ford ever decides to crate their 5.2 flat-plane crank motor (with the ECU pack!), then it’d be worthwhile.

But bang-for-buck, you can’t go wrong with the LS.

It says a lot, especially the Renegade Porsche conversions, where the LS weighs as much as the original flat six and has 150+ HP more right out of the box... With a warranty...

Coyote! That was great in 2011.

Normally aspirated LS engines are smaller and lighter.

But…

Modding an old Ferrari is not about tech or speed. It is about fun in a vintage Italian exotic.

Remember the fun of driving an old Italian car?

If you want to get bang for buck, get a crate Coyote engine.

Technology has moved on, you can get a Camry with over 300 hp. Nothing like dropping $100k on an old 308 and still having a soccer mom smoke you on a freeway on-ramp.

Back in the old days, just one bad tank of gas could take down even the best turbo system.

Plenty of usage factors to keep in mind.

Isn’t it amazing how good a platform the 308 is for forced induction?

Building a normally aspirated hot rod is really low on the $/HP scale.

I know of 3 ventilated blocks that had Norwood systems.

All 3 are back on the road today, sans turbos.

Abuse is a relative term, but I'll agree the transaxles will take a bit of punishment, the twill gears... not so much.

Transaxle is fine if you don’t abuse it.

No experience with the Koenig setups but the Norwood ones are aging well.

A modern single turbo would be a lighter and less complicated solution with minimal lag.
