To be fair that information on BMW is not new, it’s been talked about for more than a year. They claim they can build a single version of a car with all the options ( controlled I assume by a touchpad), where you can add and delete items as you wish. I see the logic ( although I hate the idea personally)… Move from Florida to New York with your BMW and wish you had bought seat heaters? Well presto, you can add them for a monthly fee. ( and assumably stop paying for them in the summer). I hate the idea but BMW can show a constant revenue source to the investors and even used cars will suddenly have all the options available if you buy one so it’s probably going to happen….BR in StockholmSent from my iPadOn 21 Jan 2022, at 05:07, Erik Nielsen <judge4re [at] gmail.com> wrote:
If BMW got their way, you’d own nothing and be perfectly happy. I’ll pass.

OK, went down the rabbit hole on this whole 3G car service:
Ferrari claims none of their models are susceptible.
GM likewise, except a few models will need a software and possibly a
hardware upgrade supposedly at no cost.
Maserati likely will have issues. Looks like they will do a hardware
upgrade (free??) together with a mandatory $9.95/mo subscription.
Toyota says "tough shit", we aren't going to do anything. Nissan may
be in the same boat.
“Although these circumstances were created by factors beyond our
control, we sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause,” Toyota
said in a statement on its website.
Honda has a software upgrade that must be done before Feb 22nd, as it
is received via the 3G network. After that, it's going to cost you!
From Consumer Reports:
“The only way to update firmware on the TCU is through an OTA
[over-the-air] update via AT&T’s mobile network,” says Chris Naughton,
a spokesperson for Honda and Acura. “Since the TCUs in question are
currently communicating via 3G, once that network stops operating,
there is no further opportunity to communicate with the TCUs to
perform the update.”
If the TCU is not updated via 3G, it has to be replaced for $800-$900.
Audi is looking into either some sort of dongle that plugs into a USB
port, or a "professionally installed" hardware upgrade.
Many of the other brands are giving, at least for now, a "no comment",
including MB.
A couple of comments:
Both our 2017 Chevy Volt and GMC Acadia are already 4G, and they
promise everything to work until at least 2026.
And a real juicy nugget: Seems BMW is eventually going to a
subscription model on even basic standard accessories. For example,
one auto news source says there will be a monthly fee to use the seat
warmers!!!!

On the bright side, you don’t need to worry about losing pairing with your
cell phone once they shut down 3G like the new Ferraris (and plenty of other
late model cars).
Can’t wait for those drivers to start complaining.
