An equally modest amount in Eaton Vance actually did better.

The most fun of that era was money my brother strong-armed me for to buy us Qualcomm at $12.  Unloaded it in 1999 after 3 splits yielded 16/1 and a 2,600% increase in those shares.  

C'mon Brian...  even with now-sight, ya can't spend $25K over asking for a MercJeep and gain any ground.  ;-)
