One more thing while he has that apart have him replace that other bearing because if one failed you never know when that one might fail also.?

He did take the oil pan off and oil pick up tube off. As a matter of fact, it is still off the car. It looks like the bearing is still there but no he broke the bearing a little bit to insert the head of a screw in there and used that screw  to pull the bearing out. I held the bearing in my hand and frankly didn’t  bother or forgot to ask him if it was loose or something. But then again, once it’s broken you can’t tell how it was before.
He seemed confident he did the right thing and he’s just waiting for the part to arrive. It’s been at the border (customs) for a few days now.

I asked him if it’s so hard to take the cover off, why should it be any easier once the whole engine is out. He said, once the engine is out, you just have many many more, better angles to hit the cover all around and have it separate from the engine. With the pan off, he said he could see the inside and saw there was some kind of material/glue whatever that was keeping it glued solidly.

He even tried hitting a razor blade with a hammer to get it in between to open it up a little all around. Nothing was moving.

Michel,

That picture looks like the bearing has been installed. It is a thing that has the writing on it. The reason he couldn't get that cover off was because like we said after you takeoff the oil pan you have to reach up in there and unbolt the oil pick up tube. No matter I can't be 100% sure but I think that outer bearing was the one that failed, not the inner one  so hopefully this will get your car back on the road shortly! Can you ask your mechanic to see the bearing that he removed, and ask him whether it was broken before he removed it?  maybe post a pic?  Im off to play in N Ireland….

Remember a few months ago my mechanic said he’ll need to take the engine out to change the outer bearing (because it was moving about 1/8”) and some of you said it can be done without taking the engine out. My second mechanic tried and tried but just could not separate the cover from the engine. All the bolts were out, the oil pan was off but that cover was stuck solid and he gave up after trying every which way. He was too afraid to break something.

So, he decided to take the bearing out of there with the cover on. It worked. Now, the new bearing is at the border waiting for clearance and he is confident he’ll put that new bearing in with the cover on. Here is the picture I took today without the bearing (on the left side or back of engine).

I’ll keep you posted
