Yep, the inner bearing is always in an oil bath so it rarely (but happens) goes bad.  The outer bearing can be pulled with a Draper kit.   Mr. Garven and I found Draper kit years ago and it saved a whole lot of grief.   You do have to destroy the bearing, but you're changing it anyway.

I must have missed this email when you originally sent it. No problem replacing that outer bearing without taking the cover off. Only reason to take the cover off is if you want to replace the inner bearing. I'm not suggesting removing the outer bearing is trivial, but you don't have to pull the cover off for that. Hopefully you're good and done!

So does this mean you will be at Mt Tremblant? I am really looking forward to meeting you there. Even if your car isn’t ready, come on up for the festivities.

Subject: [Ferrari] News on taking off engine cover to change outer bearing

Remember a few months ago my mechanic said he’ll need to take the engine out to change the outer bearing (because it was moving about 1/8”) and some of you said it can be done without taking the engine out. My second mechanic tried and tried but just could not separate the cover from the engine. All the bolts were out, the oil pan was off but that cover was stuck solid and he gave up after trying every which way. He was too afraid to break something.

So, he decided to take the bearing out of there with the cover on. It worked. Now, the new bearing is at the border waiting for clearance and he is confident he’ll put that new bearing in with the cover on. Here is the picture I took today without the bearing (on the left side or back of engine).

I’ll keep you posted

P.S.: Ferrari better win in Montréal, no excuse.
