+1 to the USP in .40.  My personal preference is .45 (love my Tactical, 
Expert, & Std.), but .40 does give you greater than 12 + 1 rounds and 
(more than) adequate stopping power.  I, too, have never had a failure 
to go bang that can be attributed to any HK.  Btw, the ER docs hate the 
Hydra-Shok ammo - all those multiple wound paths to probe for bullet 
fragments.
