Because the German IDIOTS at BMW thought they knew better than the consumer, what the consumer wants.

Add it to the Bangleized designs, I-Drive, and the like.
It's why BMW now has to compete on breadth of product line versus desirability of fewer (more competent) products.
No longer is it 3/5/7/M it's 1/2/3/5/6/7/X/Z/M
The M5 essentially died on the vine because of the SMG and BMW's unwillingness to recertify the E60 body with a larger fuel tank. Owners are having to refuel their thirsty M5 every day or two due to a "too small" tank.
