I completely agree the more modern BMW 3 series has gotten fat. If I want a
car as big as the old 5 series, I would have purchased a 5 series. I
thought the old E30 chassis was the perfect size. They are becoming VERY
expensive
nowadays. Clean ones cost more than E36's. It is very common in the
Chicago area to find an E30 S50/2 hybrid swap. I know of at least 30 in the
local
chapter BMW chapter. Unfortunately, they are approaching astronomical
maintenance costs due to age and availability of parts.

Afterthought...Oh, and Rodney, I'm not just going by published numbers. I
don't know what the published numbers are for the '98 328iS, for example,
but I know that it "felt" fast enough, but also too big and (in my view)
unnecessarily heavy/cumbersome. If I were making $70k or so per year I
could probably "afford" to get a Ferrari again and not have to worry about
maintenance expenses, etc. (although there's ALWAYS some kind of "budget" to
consider) but that's my problem...suffice it to say that I go a lot by seat
of the pants feel, I'm just trying to use numbers to get qualfiying cars for
the "short list".

P.S. If I had one car to choose from, it would probably either be a '93 or
'94 RS America or a 365GTC/4. Or a 365GTC.
