You know I had a professional friend who headed a state agency who had been
in some version of U.S. Navy Special Operations (though they were called
something else back then) and who was involved in "liberating" some allied
special operations folks from the Japanese interrogators.

The most interesting "legend" about him involves his returning from an
emergency call in Eastern Kentucky and running out of gas in his state car
(over
there this is quite possible to do as in many cases there is a dearth of
gasoline stations open after dark). He had walked several miles (the story
varies
from 3-10, his version is only 3) to find a station where the owner lived on
the premises and talked him out of a gas can and five gallons of gasoline
(which weighs close to 40#). He was heading back from the gas station and was
offered a ride back to the car in some sort of Japanese car, Toyota, Nissan,
etc. He refused to even ride in that car and carried the gasoline back to the
car on foot. He never talks much about those missions other than to say that
from what he remembers of them caused him to act that way.

>From that story, and my past experiences in Tokyo with some police and other
governmental agencies of Japan has made it easy for me to both to infer what
happened during his experiences with WWII, and to draw may own conclusions
that nothing that the Japanese do, including predatory pricing of their
vehicles in the U.S. is done to benefit anyone other than themselves. Couple
that
with a most innocuous, but virulent form of racism and there is no doubt that I
won't own one of their automobiles except under circumstances when a
symbiotic subsidy of cost as reflected in a pricing model and my needs are
purely
utilitarian.
