To continue this story:  Perhaps a year after I bought
the car from Matt and after FoH's rebuild where the
supposedly went through every system, the alternator
failed.  The bearings seized causing the belt to
break.  Of course, I was 40 miles from home.  We put a
new alternator on the car at that time.  

Between us, I think the problem is HEAT.  The
alternator sits right next to the headers and just
cooks.  I believe that the mechanical failures are
because the heat cooks the oil out of the bearings.
