Ahhh... the memories of being at the 84 Detroit GP - the last couple of years of the Turbo Time - those little cars - turbo cars were around 2.0L IIRC, and they would absolutely *Scream*!! I walked thru a parking deck when moving from one location to another and Good Lord!, the noise was amazing! Can't recall which engine they ran - probably the whole range of V8s, 12's ? - must have had pistons like thimbles to stay under 2.0L/
The turbo-era motors were 1.5 liters. Interestingly, the BMW 4-cylinder motor used a stock production block from the BMW1600/2002 street cars. I've heard they would source the blocks from running cars in local junkyards as opposed to using new blocks. The idea being that a used engine was well seasoned from many hot/cold cycles. I've also heard that in addition to bolting the head to the block, some of the turbo motors also had the heads welded to the block to try to keep them from blowing off under the 70-80lbs of boost they ran.
