The other side of that bill will be the apparently unstudied economic
consequences of requiring a 600% increase in the use of E85 by the same
period.

The diversion of corn production to E85 has profound consequences for
all aspects of the economy. Already this year, we have seen a 30%
increase in the cost of boarding my wife's horses because the corn-based
feed costs have skyrocketed and so has the cost of hay since many
producers in our area that were growing hay are re-tooling for corn.

Imagine the uproar of the economically disadvantaged when all the cheap
food that is largely based on corn syrup starts to jump dramatically.
Everything from cereal to soda will be subject to that jump. Even meat
will jump as corn feeds for cattle escalate in price.

Over time I'm sure production will catch up, and maybe we can get rid of
some outdated subsidies to push more corn production, but in the short
term there will be some ugly unintended consequences of this fuel.

You said <<the EPA has "recalculated" their figures to give more
realistic (?) results>>

Naturally - they can't accept the data from their own tests - that would
be waaay to easy ;-)

The new CAFE has long term effects that are worrisome to me. Rather
than let consumerism and Capitalism determine what kind of cars are
available for us to buy we now have the govt making decisions on what we
ultimately are offered. To get to 35 CAFE cars will probably get
smaller with lighter panels and chassis - and when a major corp cannot
make their nubers will the govt say, "OK, better start shutting
production down and send all those union workers home." Not a chance -
they'll get an extension -

So now we have auto design by govt - which started back in 1968 -
rememebr the confusion when we found those cool glass covers over the
XKE headlights were outlawed? Removed a beautiful design feature for
queationable govt reasons - at least to me.

But the worst thing about the bill containing the 35 CAFE was the nearly
9000 pieces of Pork included from both sides of the aisle costing over
$4.5 Bil. Naturally we need all that crap - ;-p

Merry Christmas -
