It really isn't halfass at all to re-use the original o-rings. They
are held captive in the calipers, are only exposed to brake fluid, and
don't seem to deteriorate at all.
I've rebuilt 100s of ATE calipers over the last 20+ years, and have never had a problem.
I do leave the o-rings immersed in brake fluid when removed so they don't dry out.
I beleive an o-ring that is close enough dimensionally to work us available from mcmaster, but there is some question as to what material will stand up to brake fluid.
I vaguely recall that one of the suppliers of Porsche parts may have the o- rings available. But I could be wrong ...
In fact many times I'll get a car in the shop with seized calipers but the pads and rotors are fine ... In these cases I leave it up to the customer ad whether they want new rotors and pads.
The moral of the story is flush your brakes at least every two years if not more often (I try to do my own cars annually) and use a quality DOT 4 fluid.
Don't get me started on silicone fluids (DOT 5) ... They cause even more problems.

Offsides comment because I haven't done it but, the answer I have read seems to be the old square not-really-O-rings. My guess is that if one, in the act of rebuilding brakes, is going to the trouble to split a caliper, they should source new rings, replace the rotors and hoses and install new pads. Seems false economy to re-use or halfass it.

My guess is that the "don't split the caliper"is because of two things; (1) the ham-fistedamateurbrake-pad swapper could cause a nasty accident,and(2) legal boiler-plate.
