Politely....highly unlikely. Or absurd.

If the tranny is in gear, having ones hand resting on the shift ball should not
have any effect on anything, other than the state of mind of the
driver....Now...if you actually apply pressure in either direction, I could see
that there could be a little wear on the shifter fork itself as it would rub
against one or the other side of the groove it rides in, but that is about it.
As the whole assembly is sitting in a bath of gear lube, I seriously doubt it
would cause any problem. Marginally more friction maybe. If the tranny is in
neutral, applying pressure in either direction would cause some wear on a
synchro.....but what the hell are you doing driving around in neutral!!!???

When the tranny is in a gear, the synchro for that gear is fully locked. And
all the other synchros are fully unlocked. There can be no synchro wear while
the tranny is in a gear.

Just my humble opinion...and I am for sure not a certified Ferrari mechanic (or
certified mechanic of anything for that matter)....but I have studied a bit how
manual trannys work, and I do rest my hand on the gear shift while
driving...but don't apply any pressure.

So, I was talking to a Ferrari certified mechanic this week (about
transmissions and related problems) and he asked me if I drive around with
my hand on the shifter. I said sure, sometimes I leave my hand on the
shifter. He said this is bad and to stop. Your had should only be on the
shifter during a gear change (according to this mechanic). He indicated
that the pressure of my hand on the shifter would put a load on the shifting
forks and thereby increase the wear on the synchronizers. This is actually
the first time I have ever been told that leaving your hand on the shifter
is a bad thing. Heck that is some of the fun of driving a manual
transmission car.

I trust this guy a lot and he has proven to be very knowledgeable about
Ferraris. So, has anyone else been told this? Is this just a Ferrari
thing? Or is this common knowledge and I was just not informed?

Anyway, since this was new information to me, I wanted to pass this along to
others.

Thanks,
Dave Craig
