It all depends on what you want and/or need to do.

If you are patching sheet metal, welding in floors, and fenders, doing  
basic exhaust work mostly in places where either the welds will be  
ground down, filled and painted, and generally where they won't be  
seen (or appearance is not too important) then go with a MIG.

If you are doing race car fabrication, and want/need super pretty  
welds then get a TIG. A TIG will also give you the ability to weld  
aluminum, if you get a square wave TIG.

The learning curve on a TIG is much steeper, and welding with it (even  
after you master it) is much slower than with a MIG.

I bought a Miller 252 (MIG) a year ago for the shop and although it is  
way more machine than I will ever need, I couldn't be happier.
