Just make sure it will allow you to do everything you want.

Found out the hard way with a VCR/DVD recorder. I knew I could not copy 'copy protected tapes' but discoverd that HBO,Showtime, etc have encoded their programing with copy protection.

I had borrowed a unit from a friend that went south for the winter and was burning DVD of movies, Turdors. So I bought the same brand VCR/DVD recorder set it up, boxed up the loaner, when I pressed the record button promptly got an error code that ment it was copyprotected material.

I was able to find his model on eBay and it works perfectly. The only problem that it does NOT do HD (copies but you lose the edges). I would bet that any device that is able to do HD will have the protection built in.
I agree if you can get it to the PC you can do anything you want.

Subject: [Ferrari] Tivo & DVR

Howdy - Getting ready to join the rest of the world and buy a DVR and I'm considering springing for a Tivo service also -

Ya'll are always so knowledgable about this stuff I thought I'd see what you suggest -

Tivo has a plan for $12.95/mo or $129/yr - is there any reason to buy a more expensive plan?

I've been pricing DVR's also - some come with tivo as part of the package. The lower priced ($149) has a Tivo Series II Dual TunerDigital Recorder w/80 hr cap HD. This will give 80 hours of recording time - whch looks like enough to me -

However, obviousdly there will be some programs I;ll want to save - since it comes with ethernet & USB ports I assume I can download programs into my computer network?

Once in the puter I'm sure I can put it on a DVD.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Take Care,
Larry T
