Check out Weaknees.com before committing - they sell boxes.
If you go with DirectTV you can only lease the box, not own it,
hence not modify it.

Know that DVR software lacks some of the good features of TIVO.  
Don't mix DVR and TIVO in the same sentence....they aren't the same.

!! Important - TIVO just announced a contract with DTV to develope an HD TIVO 
and 
might be worth the wait.

I just upgraded my series I TIVO (160G hd) and just wish it were series II with 
USB...
        IMHO that's the best system out there if you can live without HD.

Re plans...don't know what you are referring to about more expensive plan...
I've had the 2 receiver TIVO plan since day 1 and it's as you quote now $13/mo
and only more expensive is adding HBO or Stars etc...
