Thx to Paul and Stephen (so far) - the info you provided is very helpful.  I 
haven't paid much attention to this new technology and without help it can 
be hard to understand the literature -  afterall, the sales lit. will say it 
can do everything but dance the Somba ;-)

OK - looks like the $13/mo is the only plan offered - I assumed there was 
more there than it was.

That's very helpful to know about the recording of stuff from HBO/Starz, etc 
on TV -  We like to record stuff so we can watch it at our own pace later - 
never any intertion to steal anything -

And we can live without HD -

Which reminds me - was reading the Crutchfield catalog - an excellent source 
of info BTW, and I found this the ultimate in absurdity -  They have a table 
of the types of TV's, LCD, Plasma and rear projection with the pros and 
cons.  Under pro's it listed the Flat Plasma as having  "lifelike color that 
is closest to conventional tube TV's"  @!!!  Son of a witch!  All this money 
and effort spent converting the nations TVs and their signals and what do we 
end up with?  Something as good as what we've had for 50 years!

I can only hope they intended their comment to convey a different situation, 
but that's exactly what it says.  It's probably on the Crutchfield website 
if anyone cares to look -

OK, So I can pick a DVR that doesn't record HD but *has* ethernet and/or USB 
ports so I can hook up my laptop.

Thx agn for all the help - looks like it's just a matter of finding features 
and  disk size.  The unfortunate thing is, unless I buy a DVR on eBay or 
such I'll be stuck with the DVR that "does it all" - namely it records in 
HD.
