Michael,
I wasn't saying anyone with the deep pockets to buy a new Ferrari can't
*afford* the guzzler tax - if "afford" is the right description of that
particlar rape - I don't thnk *anyone* should be forced to pay confiscatory
taxes.

Never said a Ferrari buyer wouldn't be abe to pay the money -
If I'm ever in a position to have the money to buy a new Ferrari I hope I would
still look at the things I'm going to be paying for. I know $500 floor mats
and $300 shift knobs are part of the deal - but giving the govt an extra few
thousand $$s doesn't seem right - after all, every fill up will extract more
tax dollars from the Ferrari owner - every mile driven at 12mpg's will put more
money into the govt coffers. Besides, the govt doesn't do anything for that
particular tax.

I fail to see the need to tax ferrari buyers even more.

BTW - whenever the govt decides to "punish" the rich because they have money -
remember the 80s when they taxed luxury goods at usury rates - they screw
things up royally? For one thing, luxury boat yards went out of business -
and because they sometimes were the dominate business in small towns, the towns
suffered to the extreme - because along with the shiny yachts in the Miami Boat
Show there's all those hardware stores, speciality wood stores, marine engine
manufacturers, and on and on. Then the stores that feed *them* are affected
un-naturally. And people lose the jobs they spent a lifetime building..

Anyway - hope that clears up my position. I'd hate to hear I will have to pay
a "rich person tax" on my 35 year old 911 because some nitwit in DC decides my
meager disability income makes me wealthy.

Sincerely,
Larry T (74 911, 91 300D 2.5T)

        LOL, you're funny Larry.

NEVER have I heard someone wanting to buy a new Ferrari walk into a
dealership and go: "Damn, I could 'just' afford a new 430, but I can't afford
the car with that Gas Guzzler tax added on! My dreams are over, I'm going to
have to go buy a Buick now.....Damn those Washington Socialists,
boo-hoo.....sniff..."

Please - buyers are spending several thousand$$$ extra to have those
gold stripes painted on their Scuderia's hood to match the color of the rims
and have the seat-stitching threads contrast the seat leather. Do you think
any of these 'extras' make the car go faster? These folks don't care about the
money, good for them. Care to guess that the California won't sell well, even
in this economy?

Speaking of designs and style, my 1st inclination is to blame the govt
(always eager to blame Big Brother) ;-) and I think I'd be correct if we
were back in the 70s when we hd such lovely designs as rubber bumpered MGBs
and minimum height bumpers affecting most all other cars. I feared we'd
end
up with cars designed via govt edict which IMO gave us the Jelly Bean cars
Doug described.

But lately we've moved away from that - while most cars still look
alike
I think that's because they are replicating success. Hyundai makes a top
of
the line model that looks like the S Class MB - not very subtle. ;-)

Not sure what Ferrari is doing design-wise - but the 360 was a fresh
look when it initially came out. I thought the 550 was a "design
child" of
the 365 Daytona.. A perfect successor to the Daytona IMO --

And on a completely different subject:
I assume Ferrari buyers must pay a Gas Guzzler Fine for most models. Am
I also correct in assuming that doesn't really accomplish anything other
than collecting some money from people buying new cars? Wealth
redistribution at its best - and nothing else?

I will likely never buy a new Ferrari - probably not a used one either -
especially since I became disabled -although things were looking good for
putting a red car in my garage until the disease changed things - but it
irritates me no end to think of the govt mandating a gas guzzler tax - just
to move money from Ferrari (and other car's) buyers - even though it's
a tax
*I* won't have to pay. I just cannot understand the *glee* some feel when
talking about "sticking it to" the people paying that kind of fee!

What has happened to people? Seeing others suffer (in a sense) ? Is that a
new sport?

Later-

Sincerely,

Green recounts a recent conversation with Luca di
Montezemolo, president of Ferrari. "He said the styling was
dictated by aerodynamics and the need to keep a Ferrari glued
 to the road at 180-plus,"

If that's the case, then any car as ugly as the Enzo should have much
higher
levels of performance than it does.

I think there should be a division of styling at Ferrari. 95% of owners
never go anywhere near the cars limits, so the trade off of ugly for
performance is a waste. I think they should divide their models into 2
groups, the really ugly ones with hyper performance for the guys who are
interest in track work, and GT cars, which would focus on beauty. For the
odd time a GT car is run really fast, or flat out, it's almost always in a
straight line on the highway anyway.

Sure, it's nice to have stability at 180 in a straight line too, but for
the
few times it happens, do what everyone did up until a few years ago; when
you feel the front wheels life off the ground, back off a tad. :-) If you
have to trade off all those potential great looks, for added down force cos
you might get caught out at 180, then you're probably in over you head
anyway, have no right swimming in the deep end of the pool. hee hee

Just my thoughts from a guy who drives a car with a wiggly back end. :-)
