Hi,

Ferrari screwed up when they installed the wrong torque converter in the 400 THM tranny. It needs a 2800 to 3000 rpm stall speed converter instead of what I think is a 2100 rpm in there now. That one simple change makes the car a beast. That's the way a good Ferrari mechanic explained it to me anyway.

Also, there are newer GM trannys that might work since the control units are now programmable with after market control modules. No need for all the computer hookups.

I would try the torque converter route first. If that doesn't meet your standards, then talk with a GM tranny expert at a Hot Rod shop. As I understand it, this is a popular upgrade for older GM cars with the THM 350 and 400 units. I think the new tranny is the 4L65-E.

If you go that route, make certain you research the hot rod forums where some very bright people are dealing with far more horsepower -- try 1000 running through their automatics.

Regards,

Hunter

Are there any stateside 400/400i/412's stateside that are manual? I have
always been intrigued but only come across the automatics. If I read
correctly, all the autoboxes are GM 3-speeds? Can they be upgraded, swapped or
improved? Could a vette 6-speed be dropped in? Of course anything can be done
with the right amount of money but if it's a GM part, the possibilities seem
enticing. Even a better autobox makes sense to make better use of the
powerplant.

Hey, I'm in trouble already. Why not get into more?
