If the engine hasn't been 'out' in ages, and you want to replace some of the bearings and harder-to-reach seals, AND replace some of the hoses, AND you want to clean some things, then pulling the motor allows for a much-easier access to everything. You'll add about 20 hours or so to your labor bill just to pull the engine, but if you have a long list of 'while-you're-in-there' extras you'd like to tackle, then pulling it isn't a bad idea. If you JUST want to do the 'major', then pulling the engine isn't a necessity.
