If the engine hasn't been 'out' in ages, and you want to replace some of the 
bearings and harder-to-reach seals, AND replace some of the hoses, AND you want 
to clean some things, then pulling the motor allows for a much-easier access to 
everything.  You'll add about 20 hours or so to your labor bill just to pull 
the engine, but if you have a long list of 'while-you're-in-there' extras you'd 
like to tackle, then pulling it isn't a bad idea.  
 
If you JUST want to do the 'major', then pulling the engine isn't a necessity.

Not sure of protocall here but would like to pose a question. I own  a 78 308
gts and we're doing the major service. Why would'nt you pull the body
off the engine and transaxle rather than remove engine from top? If i'm
mistaken please save me from a painful learning experience. Thanx, bill ward
