Point of clarification for Tom: Yea it was a single seater. Actually Lance
built three versions of the Sacab. The 1st was the Chevy powered sports car
that beat Phil Hill, et al in the 1958 Times Grand Prix, held at Riverside.

Then came the front engined F1 car that he and Chuck Daigh raced in Europe. By
that time the mid-engined revolution was in full swing and it was hopelesly
outdated. They came back home after Spa I think.

Then came a mid-engined version that was tested at Riverside and Willow
Springs, but never raced. I took pictures of the 1st two, but only saw the
mid-engined in Competition Press, I think. It looked first-class, as all
Reventlow's toys were.

BTW, an intersting story about Lance and James Dean. The last people to see and
talk to Dean before his 'date with destiny,' 30 minutes up the road were he and
Bruce Kessler, who were also driving from L.A. to the races in Salinas. ean and
his mechanic in the 550 Spyder and Lance and Kessler in Lance's 300SL Gullwing.

Reventlow had stopped at a little gas station at Blackwell's Corner, out in the
middle of nowhere, for a coke, and dean had recognized the Gullwing and stopped
too. I've been there too many times. They used to have the best tuna salad
sandwiches on home-baked whole wheat that I've ever tasted.

Anyway, they chatted for a while, and Reventlow had taken off before Dean. In
fact, Lance and Bruce didn't learn that Dean had been killed until much later
that night. Who knows, if they had taken of
f together, they all might have been involved.

Hope this helps. Why is it that I can't remember what I had for breakfast, yet
remember what happened 50 years ago?

Maybe I was thinking of the BoCar Stilleto.  :)

The Scarab wasn't an open wheeler, was it?  I was doing other research, guess
it's time to no longer trust my memory and go to Google.

Ah, youth is so fleeting.

Tom in er, hmmm, Hereford, AZ?  No?

Hey Tom: They weren't? I'll just be damned! They had 2.4 litre engines,
conformed with all F1 rules, and raced in F1 events. They were built for F1
exclusively and raced in no other series. Too small for Indy, too big for
either sprints or midgets, and as a single seater with no fenders, etc, was
excluded from orld Sports Car competition.

If you really want to get technical, Gurney's Eagle wasn't a true F1 car to
start with. Goodyear, who put up a large portion of the financial backing
wamnted it to be primarily an Indy car. It was designed as a dual purpose
vehicle that, with minor modifications be either. and it had far greater
success as an Indy car than F1. Look it up in the book Dan Gurney's Racing
Eagles. If you don't have a copy, you can borrow mine.

0ATo quote yer old buddy 'Tailgunner Joe' McCarthy, If it looks like a duck,
walks like a duck, and sounds like a duck, it must be a duck. End of discussion.

I think the article's point was that Dan Gurney and the Eagle was the
only American driver to drive an American car (actually Anglo-American) in
Formula 1.  The Scarabs were awesome cars, but they weren't F1 cars.
