Hey Doug: Pardon me for interrupting, but Ward drove a Kurtis-Kraft Offy
Midget at Sebring in 1959. Ward sure got my, and the Europeans' respect that
day.

Ever the ultimate racer, Roger showed up, ready to 'run what he brung.' The
engine displacement of his Leader Card Watson Offy Indy car was way over the
2.5 litre F1 limit of the time, so he ran the midget.

He had met and raced against the Europeans earlier in the 'Race of Two
Worlds,' held at Monza, The banking was used, and it's a miracle that nobody
was
killed, like Jean Paul in 'Grand Prix'.

Although Sterling Moss broke the steering on his 'World's Fastest Ice Cream
Wagon' Maserati on the banking, hit the upper guard rail, breaking his nose,
and spun harmlessly down to the bottom.

And, somewhere in what's left of my memory, I do recall Gary Bettenhausen
bringing out an old front engined Sprint Car to do battle with the rear engined

Indy road racers at the Rex Mayes 200 at Riverside. Gary was another REAL
racer. Remember 1967? Cold and overcast? Those Riverside Indy races were the
only times that we got to see Jimmy Clark before he died at Hockenheim. Or was
he in one of Colin Chapman's Lotus 19s at the Times GP?

If Roger Penske wouldn't have fired him for disobeying orders, and getting
himself almost killed in some meaningless sprint car race, IMHO, I think he
probably would have won at least one 500. Too bad.

Yer old pal, Ferrari Bubba

Yo Tom - then how about Kurtis Kraft, or Watson Roadster, or the Epperly
Offy. Now that's about as 'merican cigar chomping as you can get. From
1950 to 1960 there were tons of Merican drivers and cars - some, like Roger
Ward even raced at the US GP at Sebring F1 race in his "Indy" car.

SO - every year above the Indy winner was classified as an F1 winner with
championship points. These guys finished in the final standings of F1 those
years 8th or 9th .

Now if the article guy sez, 1966 or later - - - - well, then, ok.

DOUG
