The McF1 was also the first road car based entry to win outright as well...very
impressive.

But, the F40 did win against the F1 towards the end of its career...

The fastest top speed recorded at Le Mans is 405 kmh. This was in 1988 by
Roger Dorchy in a WM Peugeot P88.

The McLaren ran 240 but IMO the biggest acheivement for McL was winning
Lemans *overall* the 1st try.  Granted they
had some well qualified help.

The 917s and 956/962s were in the mid 240s.

Many of the top speed records down the Mulsanne were done at night when the
air was cooler!  I watched a In-Car video showing a night lap at LM -
there's no lights down most of the straight - so all that is seen is what is
in the headlights.  I've heard some drivers say they like it that way -  not
sure I'd want to be blind like that....

Here's a site with many top speeds listed - including F1 records -
http://www.mat.uc.pt/~rps/f1/top_speed.html

One cmment I found interesting was <<modern F1 cars are faster than the
+1300HP turbo cars of the 1986 qualifying sessions>>

Later ya'll -
