I'm always amazed, when comparing my 308 motor to the LS6 motor in my Corvette, 
at how small the LS6 is.  I went out and took some rough measurements.

LS6 - 27 x 22 x 22 (inches)
308 - 30 x 27 x 27 (inches)

Motor only, not bellhousing.  LS6 includes the plastic covers.  Take them off, 
and the measurements would be less.  308 does not include the headers, which 
would have increased the measurements.  Measurements are approximate.  Of 
course, your results may vary.

LS6 is much smaller.  Twice the displacement.  Twice the horsepower.

It may be a pig, but I still love my 308.

Larry, focus on the external dimensions and weight of the engine not the 
displacement!!!

That's the point with the 944T. It only had 3.0 liters, but dimensionally it 
was immense and not so impressive. 

Modern engines are much smaller and lighter/bhp of output. Well, some modern 
engines.

The BMW inline 6 used in so many models is also huge and heavy.

Hey Gang -
    Remember the early Ferrari V12's?    IIRC, a 250 Ferrari is 250cc's per 
cylinder making it a 3.0L engine.  I have a hard time picturing 250CC's but 
3L is 50% larger than a 2L Coke bottle.  Getting several hundred HP from 
such a small displacement alwaysed amazed me.  Must have been pretty small 
pistons though.  If my math was better (or if I wanted to spend the time to 
figure it out) I could probably calculate the OD of the
pistons --
