Got the TR back from its lengthy repair last week. In addition to
replacing 1st gear, its mate, and the 1st syncro, the slightly noisy
clutch release bearing was replaced, and the improved crown gear carrier
was installed. There was one partially broken and several loose
capscrews that fastened the crown gear to the old carrier, so all eight
were replaced with the new style ones and new carrier bearings were
installed too. The improved carrier was a drop in fit - no new shimming
for either bearing pre-load or gear mesh was required. At 35K miles the
clutch was in good shape and, other than the broken 1st gear and loose
capscrews, all of the transaxle components were fine.
As Clyde had mentioned, I have "tribal knowledge" of the cost of properly maintaining a TR.
