The politicians also seem to believe that if someone doesn't have insurance
(or a govt option) they will skip out on paying the bills. If someone goes
to the doc for a cold and doen;t have insurance, they pay the doc's $100
visit fee, o to the drug store and buy the prescription. Insurance doesn't
come into play. People can and many *do* operate this way.
The problem comes if surgery is needed - a knee replacement is around $80K and an appendectomy is $30k iirc - even those can be paid without insurance over time - but nit's not realistic.
This is where catastrophic insurance should come in.Those who say catastrophic insurance may know something I don't but I looked at $5000 and $10000 deductibles. Wouldn't that be considered catastrophic coverage? I'm no expert - just asking the question. I didn't buy it, but I bought a traditional policy when I worked as a outside contractor.

If routine dr visits were cash on the barrelhead, no coding, no submitting claims, no third party insurer, I guarantee you costs would drop by two- thirds overnight. Do I whine and demand that my fellow citizens provide all this for me? No. I drive a Golf, rent a place, wear Dockers and eat cheap steak. Why should a service like heath care be any different? Want to cut health care costs? Get the government out of it. Our state, like every other, requires every heath care policy to cover 50-60 different procedures. Want to sell me a cheap policy that only covers catastrophic care? Can't - it's illegal. All that regulation increases the cost of the policy. Cut regulations, let companies sell policies in any state, kill the lawsuits with tort reform. What do you know, that's the GOP alternative plan: http://www.gop.gov/solutions/healthcare Private business is dying to sell me the health care I need at a price point I can afford, if only the power of the free market is unleashed.
