Well,

Fun to speculate, but my 2nd M3 threw a clutch cetrifugal spring through its bell housing at about 44k miles (fortunately it threw it down at the road!)... punched a dime sized hole in the bell housing too.

My 348 had its throwout bearing replaced (twice since the first time it was leaking, 2nd was a freebie) and after learning how to heel and toe at MSR's braking zones in it, the clutch was pretty well toasted (throwout plate teeth broken in several places but still barely attached to the main plate) at 25k miles (my bad)... Fun challenge driving the thing 90 miles home without stopping to avoid the drive train halting (since it would not disengage the clutch the entire way!)... rev matching on downshifts was much easier than upshifts...

Good luck and hopefully it won't break the Xmas budget too badly!

Does seem like that, though a busted diaphram is a strange failure mode. Perhaps the clutch disk spline has stripped. FWIW when I had my TR transaxle repaired and upgraded I replaced the still functional, but slightly gritty feeling, throwout bearing. A few bays over was a low mileage 575 that had seized its throwout bearing and the clutch diaphram release fingers were major gouged.

Guys out for a run on the TR and at the stop light got NO DRIVE !!!!

Engine runs ok but major noise from bell housing Suspect clutch assembly diaphragm may have bit the dust This one has around 77k on it
Will be into to it tomorrow and let you all know.

Oh well
