IMO the 964s and 993s are
widely considered the best air cooled made. Although the 911SC
3.0 and 3.2 had engines going 300K without
splitting the case....
I went to a car show last year and a 550 parked next to me (in
our '91 300D) - on the other side of
the 550 was a 911 - I was surprised to see the 550 was similar
in size to the 911! It was the 1st time I had
seen a 550 in person (not a lot of Ferrari's around here) -- I had always seen the 550/575 in magazines and they looked
large IMO. Awesome car!

I had a 2000 Boxster S for five

Sold it last year and bought an
old school 964 C4 cab,
which was just recently totaled by an idiot who ran a red
light and plowed into the
passenger side with his Ford F150 truck.
I'm looking to buy another 964
cab to replace it and I still have my 550 Maranello
rocketship, which I love. :)

RMS rear main seal
IMS intermediate shafts
This stuff has been bantered about on RennList
for years. Best I can sort out is the 996, the first
water cooled 911 did have problems with RMS failure
causing the IMS to basically grenade the engine.
The 997.1 (2005-2008) had a beefed up RMS
installed (except for some early 2005 cars) In my mind it
was kind of an acknowledgement that the "seal" was under
engineered. The result was far better IMS protection,
however there were still reports of some failures.
The 997.2 cars (2009-2012) they eliminated the
IMS with a new engine design. Problem solved!
( again, however it's evidence that Porsche was
aware of a problem)
I've owned a 997 for 3 years now and I chose
it over a 550. apologies to the F-List.
So far I'm very happy with the decision.
The 550: hey its a Ferrari! What's not to
like.
The Porsche: quick, precise... just more fun,
top down in the summer doesn't hurt either.
I chose the Porsche.
Ken, who still very much likes Ferraris
What was the RMS
problem?
Rear main seal or something?

Larry, the IMS
failures are what we're talking about.

Yep.
Porsche replaced a lot of 911
and Boxster engines in the early
'00s - it's a pretty well
documented problem. I had
thought my Oil Analysis testing
might help but evidently the
failure and happen quickly
with little or no warning.
The German auto industry had
problems in the 90s and are
still
fighting the results. Mercedes made
cares with paint falling off, wiring
that self-destructed and diesel
engines that had the #1 cylinder
become oval.
With Porsche, there's an additional
engine problem with the IMS failures
but I can't recall it at the moment --
