Ok
Great
Whatever you are going to pay for the car
Put away $5k for repairs
That's where the smart money is on this car
You should not pay over $20 k for it
If you do it's your money
Remember you are taking about a 35 plus year old car

I'm very late to the party. Just catching up on some reading as I've been too busy to keep up with things.

Rather an apt discussion as I'm in the process, after all these years, of buying my first Ferrari - a blue 79 308GT4 (Euro of course - being over here).

Having read what everyone has said, one of the reasons I have gone for this car is precisely because it DOES have carbs. I don't want a daily driver. I want something old school with a great sound that I can occasionally really enjoy. If I want something trouble free that still goes like stink, but in fact is pretty boring, I get in my 2.8L V6 Turbo GM Vectra thingy!

I have always loved the Bertone shape, even more so now, and I love it in blue so as long as it all goes through, week after next if all goes according to plan, I'll be a very happy bunny :-)

I'm no mechanic so probably won't be doing much taking things apart in the engine compartment, but I'm looking forward to giving the car a bit of TLC. It needs a bit of professional work done on the body, but nothing too scary or (I hope) expensive.

I think I've got a good deal, and certainly over here these cars are going up in value at a good rate.

Anyway, I'm now 64 and if I don't do it now I never will. And with interest rates as they are I might as well put some of my pension money into something that I don't think is going to go down in value, and enjoy it a bit more than having it sit in a bank account earning not very much.

And I don't hate your car
The reason carbs went away is because of fires, emissions, and starting problems just to name a few
As for styling if you like it buy it
It wasn't a big hit so Ferrari dropped it
Most people want a car any car they put a key it in an go
If everyone liked carbs we would still be watching black and whit TV and flying airliners with round engines!
That's what Clyde says!

Nice description FG.  Well done.  I hope you sent cLYdE a personalised  and signed copy.  Ah ah ah

Only problem I find now with our 308 GTS which is in the restoration process are parts are Ferrari 288 GTO expensive and one would do better looking for replacement rubber parts in a convent in France than we can any place else.  Drat

I agree that the 308 GT/4 has gotten better with age and is a very cool car. While it is very, very similar to a 308 GTB, there are enough differences to make it special in its own way.

It's basically what a 308 would look like if Lamborghini created it....just look at the Urracco, and the taillights of the Jalpa.

A '73 series I, standard ("euro") spec would be my pick, modded with 16" QV wheels and modern rubber. I'd also prefer it if it had Dino badges as opposed to Ferrari. Don't believe you see too many of those around.

This car would be more interesting to me than just about all other 308s except the carbureted euro GTBs, and maybe even the GTS as well. GTBi/GTSi, and any 308 with US bumpers is too much for me to handle.

Some of the GT4s have the same problem of course.

Carburetors and cars old enough not to need catalytic converters.....life is good. :)

Since we're sharing opinions, I'll toss mine in: I think the 308GT4 is absolutely beautiful. Yes, Bertone's designs are more space-age angular than Pininfarina's curves, but no less visionary. What I can claim is that I feel no natural attraction to most Zigato designs, and some I find to be butt-ugly!

clYde finds anything with a carburetor to be a firey death trap. That may play a role in his dislike ofvthe GT4. He hates my 308GTB for that very reason. But there is nothing on Earth that sounds better than a bank of Webers.  And I have to admit that my all time favorite auto-music comes from the six dual choke Webers on a first generation Countach. My 308GTB comes in second. And I bet Rob's GT4 ties with it for that position.

You know what opinions are like, and mine is no different. Such is life.
