The 308 fuel 'SENDER' commonly goes bad, requiring an easy replace.
A faulty gauge is quite rare.
HOWEVER
There is always the greater possibility of a bad ground at the sender (top off left tank) See attached diagram. The usual 'bad sensor' symptoms are that the gauge works fine above a full tank then suddenly goes to empty, due to a broken rheostat wire part way
down the sensor.  (The float arm moves up/down the rheostat).
A bad ground will produce low readings at ALL tank levels.
