I think you answered your own question...
The original 250 GTO was a purpose built car to go racing and did so successfully
The 288 GTO was a purpose built car to go racing... but the FIA realized Group B was to be deadly and it's reason for coming to life was disestablished before it was ever driven in anger.
The 599 GTO is exactly what you said it is... an existing road car that was put into wolf's clothing and deemed a GTO by the marketing types.
I agree with you. It's one heck of a car!!! but it should have had a Speciali or Scuderia or etc. name
given to it.

Can I ask why the 599 isn't deserving of the GTO moniker?Nice updated looks to make the 599 an aggressive looking but still refined GT. Dominant performance both power and handling. I'm completely overlooking the semi-auto transmission which is always somewhat of a hangup for me.
