Again, you answer your own question.

If it's not a homologated race car, why hang that name on it?  (because the marketing folks want to capitalize on the historical significance with out any substance, that's why - answered my own question)   It's like all these female singers today they hang the Diva moniker on.  It sorta takes away from grand dams who really are divas.  Think Lady Gaga vs. Maria Callas.   Too often today society bandies about titles where they are undeserved.

Funny side note to your mentioning Pontiac.    At my old house I had a younger couple living across the street.  She grew up at drag racing tracks in Southern California and would come over EVERY time I would spray Gunk on a car part or engine bay.  The smell brought back memories and I swear it was some sort of aphrodisiac for her.   On several occasions when her dad came to visit he would drag along his lifelong friend with him - Jim Wangers.  I've shared many a beer and burger with Jim and had MANY heated discussions as to how WRONG it was to hang the GTO moniker on an F'ing Pontiac LeMans (which IMHO had no business flying the LeMans name to begin with).   But, he was a marketing type through and through and still felt "the ends justified the means".  So right or wrong, the bottom line was they sold a lot of Pontiac GTOs.  He is a great guy and passionate about his cars.

It was cool what GTO stood for......its literal translation, and of course how it sounded as a moniker in English. Surely that's what made Pontiac copy it.

But holding Ferrari to have to make a "homologated grand tourer" in order to slap on a GTO in the modern day is a bit much IMHO considering we'll probably never ever see another homologated racing series again.
