Heh heh –

Picture this – late 1960’s – a group of us are jumping on Bills credentials and going to see the NASCAR race at Riverside Int Raceway road course.  It’s raining.  Bill has his dads old Chevy station wagon – maybe a 1953 or 4.  We take Carbon Canyon as the Riverside Freeway is jamb packed – only two lanes each way and it’s raining.  Bill is blasting around these turns and the guy in front seat finally suggests to Bill – hey, uh, you might want to slow down – these roads are slippery.  Bill informs said front seat passenger – the car’s NOT wobbly because of the roads BUT because he broke two wheel studs on the right rear wheel and the rim is flexing on the other three.  NOW the front seat is really howling and Bill starts his “OH Oooooo – THAT was close - - - -.”  Um, THAT didn’t help the situation all.  After about 20% of the race, it finally got rained out and had to finish on Tues or Wednesday.  I have pictures of all the dented cars in a single file line as they had been when the red flag fell.  Demolition derby.  Gurney and Curtis “there’s a NEW party starting in 10 minutes” Turner were racing with Bud Moore and the famous Woods Bros.

The breakfast at Bills is also the day of the Tustin episode.  Bill’s big dog “Tustin” gets up, stretches and sticks out his tongue – which causes Bill to comment “If I had a tongue like that I’d have to get an unlisted phone number.”  That’s when the baking pan of rolls comes flying out of the kitchen - - -.  That was way way way before Cheryl.

As Bill would say – Ach, those were the days.

Ferrari Bubba [Richard William (Bill) Hilser] was a hell of a roommate.  Thru him I met many many racing people.  His 356 was the first Porsche I ever drove.

Friends,

In case you haven't hear, our buddy Ferrari Bubba passed away 12/8 after a long struggle with health problems. His wife, Cheryl, posted this message on Facebook:

Well, Heaven got a very special angel today. My husband, Bill Ferrari Bubba got his wings just before 9 AM. I was home with him. He couldn't swallow his morning medications and I held his hand, asking God to make him comfortable. I told him how much I loved him, and I felt heavenly arms lifting his spirit. It was so calm and peaceful. I know a lot of you loved him and appreciated his unique sense of humor. He will be missed. He was the love of my life for the past 30 years. Time flies when you're having fun, and everyday with Bill was fun. Please make the most of each and every day with your spouse. You just can't tell when it will be the last day.
