Re: My first check engine light on the 575

The whole "proprietary code" thing is a bit nebulous. It seems that
the so called "standard" OBD codes can be supplanted with others, kind
of making the whole concept moot. Apparently the standard codes are
prefixed with the letter "P", and run in a sequence of something like
1000 codes. Maybe less, I don't remember off hand.

I had a 2006 Chevy Malibu. CEL on. It had a "P" code, but it was
outside of the standard range - something like P2123. Did a Google
search, found out it was a post-cat O2 sensor. Now, there is a
standard code for that sensor, but GM chose not to use it, and used a
"proprietary" code instead. What a crock.

Anyway, my assortment of new and old scanners seem to be able to read
"P", "C", and "B" codes on my GM cars. They just don't know what most
of them mean. I've only tried the Foxwell on the Maserati, so I don't
know what my older generic scanners may or may not find.
And on odd-ball cars like a Maserati, a Google search of mystery
codes often turns up nothing.

About once a month I get a warning message "TPMS system malfunction"
on the dash of my Maserati. The scanner shows both a "P" code and a
"C" code. Thankfully the Foxwell 520 will reset it and I'm good to go
for another few weeks.

BTW, I'm not sure what is new and improved on the Foxwell 520 vs the
510, as it appears that the software file updates are the same for
both scanners.
