It was a hail-mary type of move from Red Bull. They had nothing to lose. The tv commentators saw it as such. There was no deep thinking there. The race was over unless Lewis blew his engine. Like I wrote earlier, Horner said to the tv commentators about 10 laps before the end, “We need the racing gods on our side, we need a miracle”.
I’ve been into F1 since the 70s. It’s very very sad to end a season like this. I’m still shocked. And I’m not even a Hamilton fan.

If Mercedes pulled Hamilton in for tires he would have lost P1 and then if they didn't restart the race he would have lost the race, so there's no way they were going to risk that, they didn't anticipate getting blindsided by Massi.

From my limited knowledge it seems as though he made up his own rule at the end of the race, hard to imagine how that can stand.

Absolutely!  He should have come in for tires.  And, leave it to Hamilton to throw his team under the bus.  He may have been gracious to Max but he still had to blame someone.  Such a victim.

And I still want to know how Mercedes suddenly got so much faster about 4 races ago.  I know they swapped some engine parts but I don't recall them announcing an upgrade.

Then there is the obvious question: Why didn't Mercedes pull Hamilton in on
the Safety Car interval and put on new, probably Soft, tires? When I was
watching the race, my wife came in and said, "Its Over". My reply was, if
there is an accident, anything can happen. You have to play your best game
all the way to the end. It looked like Mercedes thought that they were "home
safe and dry" and stopped pushing. Even Hamilton questioned the tire tactics
(strategy is an often misused word).
