I said the "Opening of China" when Nixon did it was a bad idea. Still is.
On the Solar panel issue. The biggest mistake, or shortsightedness here in Kalifornia was when they rushed to get people to adopt EVs and offered huge rebates... at certain times as much at $30K. That should have been a voucher to be used towards putting Solar on your home. Granted there would have been some exceptions and exclusions for those who already had solar or lived in apartments... but to just give cash back with no thought towards future infrastructure was just asinine. But as usual, cart before the horse is de rigueur in Kommiefornia politics.

That is awesome! Probably confused the shit out of a lot of people.
As for solar, I would would add dark to fixed. Dark surfaces already absorb the sun's energy and converts it to heat. Solar roofs and parking lots are just obvious. I don't like the idea of converting green fields or forests to solar farms. I don't even like putting solar panels in the desert. Sand reflects so much light back into the atmosphere. Some of the IR gets absorbed but some makes it all the way back out into space. Light surfaces decrease the emissivity of the planet.
For me, the bigger benefit to all of this is independence from foreign oil. I don't think global warming is the existential crisis people are making it out to be. There is no way to accurately measure the temperature of the planet. There is no way to accurately model the emissivity and multiphysics thermal system of the planet. And there is no way to accurately model the impact of any given temperature change on the climate. We can't even get tomorrow's weather right. While we are likely seeing some temperature increase I do not have a ton of faith in the accuracy of the number. I have less faith in the models that try to attribute it to atmospheric gasses. I have damn near zero faith in the climate models.
But I am ok with coming up with a better energy infrastructure because I view it as a national security issue. But, even that pales in comparison to how badly we fucked ourselves by getting into bed with China. THAT is what people should really be worried about.

My sister and BIL built dragster parts and with 50 panels ran a 4 person machine shop with 2 CNC machines. Their place burnt down during a massive fire caused by our electrical company's wires 4 years ago. If everyone in the country had panels at least it would be a start! The newer panels are more efficient than the other ones. Of course I bought the best ones I could afford just like the Ferrari! We are fighting now as the CA PUC wants to charge $60 a month just to connect to the grid and supply them clean energy which they pay pennies on the dollar for our excess generation….Thats one of my ways of justifying my pollution from the Ferrari by trying to help out around the edges.RobHave to generate power to run the lights!!!!On Jan 10, 2022, at 5:15 AM, <georgedodson [at] comcast.net> <georgedodson [at] comcast.net> wrote:The figure of merit for a solar panel is something like: 1KW per square
meter, at the equator, at noon, times the efficiency of the solar panel
which is around 3%. This is around 30 Watts. So, as they say, powers a small
fan. Without looking it up, a recharge is about 30 min at 30 KW! That is
why, to replace a 1 unit reactor, you have to cover the state of RI with
solar panels.
