The "Iron Duke"...  I'd forgot about that POS...  for obvious reasons.

But,

BMW took a bunch of M10 1.5L iron block 4cyls and threw them out behind the engineering building... sitting in the mud and the German weather...dogs peeing on them.  They even encouraged their workers to pee on them.  "Seasoned" I believe they called process.

Then they built them into 1400HP* turbo screamers.

*Qualifying spec, turned down to 950HP in race trim

(our friend in Texas worked on that motor, his picture is in the Paul Rosche book.  That's where he bought the green tank he drove me around San Diego in.)

If the liners, pistons w. wrist pins, rings and bearings were replaced and the heads were rebuilt (new guides, valves, valve seats and cams), along with new gaskets and seals you have a new engine. The block is the block, it doesn’t wear out. It’s only worn out if the decks have been milled too many times, or it suffered a massive over-heating issue (even then, the heads would also suffer collateral damage).

You’ll have a point if they didn’t do most of the above, which is likely because I can’t see $20K covering all of my above-mentioned items.

Close to 70k on the original block, please, no matter who rebuilt it it’s worn out.

This was 1974 metal.
