Re: Changing water pump

There is one other issue regarding the 308/328 water pumps ... typically
water pumps will make noise and/or leak giving plenty of warning that they
are on the way out.

This is not always the case with the water pumps on the 308/328 cars. There
is one other failure mode ... the bearings seize with little to no warning.
Considering how easy it is to get to the water pump, and it can easily be
rebuilt it might be worth doing if there is no history and/or the car has
been sitting for a long time. (the latter seems to increase the odds of the
pump seizing)

I believe that the parts to rebuild the pump are less than $200.00 (US), and
this can easily be done yourself with basic hand tools. Just be careful to
keep track of where the parts go, and their orientation. There is one cupped
washer in there that is easy to lose track of which way it faces.

Yes, these things can easily snow ball. I've got a car (not an F-car) in the
shop right now that has a dent in the fender that the owner wanted fixed.
Well this lead to a discussion of painting the whole car, so I am
disassembling the car in preparation for the shop that is going to do the
paintwork. In the process of doing this, I found some pretty serious rust
issues hiding behind some plastic trim. Now the car is going to need some
serious re-construction whose cost will probably be close to the value of
the car by the time all is said and done, sigh.

Any noise or weeping to indicate a problem? Can you move the shaft side to
side indicating any excessive tolerance? If not and you do plan on a major
soon, I'd say forget it.

But, while you're in there...you might as well replace to avoid a surprise.
If it were an older collectible car where date codes and originality are
paramount, I'd remove the original part, have it rebuilt and save it. Since
we're talking about 328s, this may not be a concern for you.

I had a leaking rear differential cover turn into a major suspension upgrade
including coilovers as a result of the "while you are in there" mentality.

It can get pricey! :)

Regarding materials for car parts and/or music, the answer is always METAL!

Good luck,

LS

Hi listers,

I'm considering changing the water pump on my 328, while I'm at it. I can't
find in the records when it was last changed and it sure looks like it's
there for a long time!
The car does not overheat, far from it.

Any advice as to:

- change it and forget about it
- any issues about getting a new one ? (plastic vs metalic propeler, etc)
- leave it and change it next year, together with the belts?

Thanks,

Rui
