Ferrari is the ultimate in this realm I think. They had a form of "paddle"
shifting that Gilles V tested in 1978 which went first to a road car with
the F355.

Agreed on the IRS, they stayed with live axles because of the strength and
low costs. Then, when IRS did finally show up, it was so heavy. Kenne
Brown makes a nice tubular setup that is light. And, on a smooth
racetrack, the ind suspension's advantages are slimmer as there is less
suspension travel.
