I love the smell of tear gas in the morning.

Yeah, the bus was in 1974 - bunch of Emmo fans had come up to see him win
his second championship. The bus driver had to back up for some reason and
since he didn't have a camera, he got out and checked the back for safety.
While he was checking, some bog folks got in and drove off for the bog.
Word was it was on fire as it passed through the tunnel under the track
between turns nine and ten. Pity was it also was filled with the luggage of
all those Brazilians.

Hey Willi, remember Bud Man? And the Pope? And of course the various
vehicles with signs like "Virgins cured inside". And the chants, including
"Show us your tits" (and some did indeed) and "The other side sucks"
(shouted across the track during lulls between races). By far, the absolute
worst part of the whole weekend was the "toilets". Since it usually rained
that weekend, they quickly acquired several inches of mud across the entire
floor. And, God knows, you prayed it was just mud.

Hey Pat: Remember 'The Bog People?' And the year we (er...they) drove it in
and burned the captured Greyhound Bus? In the old days Watkins made
Woodstock look like a Brownie Scout convention!

Hey Bubba,

In 1978 Monza was not the last race. It was followed by the US and Canadian

races (Gilles' first win), though it was at Monza where Peterson's death

made Mairo world champ.

Mairo? Ayup... on Saturday night at Watkins Glen some fans who were

possibly not completely sober got onto the track and between turns eight

(heel of the boot) and nine they tried to paint "Go Mario" on the track.

Unfortunately, they painted "Go Mairo" instead. Close... real close.

Hey Ed: No the had the misfortune of being the #2 driver on Lotus when Mario

won. A weird similarity to Phil Hill when he won the WC in 1961 for Ferrari.

In both years the 2 leading drivers going into the last race were teamates

who all had a chance of winning the title. Hill and Taffy von Tripps and

Mario and Peterson. In both years, the last race was run at Monza and both

years the Americans won not only the race but the WC, plus both

teamate-rivals were killed at the start of the race. Tripps on the second

lap and Peterson on the grid at the start of the race. WEIRD!

I remember there was a lot of respect for Ronnie Petersen during his career,

but I can't recall if he ever won an F-l world championship or not. I know

you'll know.
