Probably no truer words have been said in the entire discussion. I should
have thought of that caveat myself <g>. Way too many people see the movie
"Dirty Harry" and have to have "the most powerful handgun in the world".

(Quite) a while back I received a gift of a Mod. 29 S&W that had been put
through their custom gun shop, round butt, the original hammer removed and
retained but one with a "bobbed" hammer installed, much trigger work done and a

short, I'll have to measure whether it was a two or three inch barrel, to carry
on duty as there was some concern as to the adequacy of certain .38spl ammo
supplied by some agencies (though I had been carrying a Mod. 66 S&W w/.357
mag. rounds). In all of the time that I carried that gun I never loaded it with
anything but .44 special ammo, which was not only more practical for my
purposes but also because with the short barrel the actual difference in
performance between .44 mag. and .44 spec. was negligible.

For most folks, as a practical matter, virtually any high quality, smaller
dimension pistol will do, even a .32acp Walther PPK (no derogation of that gun
intended, simply mentioned as an example of a small calibre pistol). As I've
said before, I generally carry a 9mm. Detonics "Pocket Pistol" which is
small, light, has nothing more than a standard, not hi-cap magazine and it
works
out just fine for me. I do have a SigSauer P239 that has been through their
custom gun shop to eliminate the rough, non-rounded edges, the external hammer

assembly, etc., that works well under a business suit. Like most of us, my
carry firearm is a tool to disengage myself from any confrontation and then
turn it over to active, full time law enforcement officers.

I might recommend that those who are planning on carrying a firearm for
self-defense purposes obtain and read a copy of Marine LtCol Dave Grossman's
book
"On Killing" to get a more realistic set of expectations of how they will
really react in any real, armed confrontation. There is more to carrying a
concealed weapon, and even displaying it in an attempt to avoid an armed
confrontation that results in weapons being fired and this is perhaps the most
frequently omitted component of any conceal and carry firearms course.
