Hi Steve,
From your's, Dave's and others comments, I plan to disregard what a
gunstore salesman said and do what Dave H suggested - carry as the gun as
intended -
re: your potential infection. As you probably know, infection can be one
of the biggest things to worry about. When one of my feet was operated on by a
orthopaedic surgeon it became infected, I had to have a PICC line inserted --
in an artery near my armpit that then went near my heart so the antibiotic
could be given in larger doses where it would be diluted better by the larger
bloodflow-- and had an antibiotic med bag on my waist for 6-7 weeks. No fun at
all. I chalked it up to bad luck. 12 months later I needed surgery on the
other foot - this time it was infected again and then the fun began. I woke up
with 105F temp and Sepsis (infection in the blood) -- then an infection
specialist was brought in and once again, another PICC line and 7 more weeks of
antibiotics. So I will not be using that surgeon again. I now see a different
ortho guy who has not had any problems so far. Since I could not see how the
1st doc prepared and performed I cannot say definitively he caused the
infections but I won't take any more chances.
As far as your infection chances - I'm sure they told you what to look out
for - swelling, red streaks, temperature (even a mild one) can all indicate an
infection. So be very cautious - Sepsis has a 1:3 death rate. Don't let a
warning sign go without being checked. A false alarm is better than the
alternative.
Over the past 10 years I have learned more than I ever *wanted* to know
about surgery ;-) And I hope I never have ocassion to learn more.
Yeah, being unable to drive for 6 weeks is a huge PITA, but at least time
flies now that we have gotten older. ;-) Sorry 'bout that.
If I weren't so far away I'd come by and take you for a drive in your
Ferrari (if you'd let me) - you could hear the engine sing near redline and
feel the wind and sun on your face. It would probably speed the healing
process!
Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Larry;
I don't know if Dave is a professional or not, but not feeling well after
surgery (hopefully there won't be the complications that we discussed earlier
but I'm following the rules to the letter to prevent any infection. You
description of what occurred made a true believer out of me) and being in the
Christmas spirit I guess I'll just leave it up to each individual to consider
what has been said, and by whom and then make up their own mind.
Worst part of it right now is that with my foot wrapped up in bandaging and
being told not to put any pressure on it the Ferrari stays parked for at least
six weeks.
