Re: NFC - Guns & CCWs - was New Indian...

I've never been stopped while firearms were in the car. The 20-some mintues it takes to go from my house to the range are driven in strict adherance the the local traffic laws. I can only imagine the news story headline: Arsenal discovered by police. The story goes on to say that an arms cache was discovered during a traffic stop. The driver spent several hours at the local police station attempting to explain why he was driving around with six automatic handguns, two sniper rifles, an assault rifle, and over a thousand rounds of ammunition.. The driver claims that he was on his way to a nearby gun range, but that could not be immediately verified.

Interesting scenario. I have a CCW and I have been stopped twice while "packing". Apparently, they do know this when they run the plates. Both times I declared the weapon immediately (and I also always keep my hands in plain sight at all times). In both cases, the officers basically thanked me for declaring it and asked to see my CCW ID (different than the driver's license). Neither required me to produce, display or surrender the gun. The last time, the cop & I discussed guns for about 10 minutes (he was pro-gun) at which point he let me go with a warning.

I know two current patrol cops (one Texas, one Louisiana), and they both are in favor of the whole CCW thing and tell me that most of their fellow cops are as well.

There are approximately 2,000,000 current CCW holders in the USA; over 170,000 in Texas. Very, very few crimes have been committed by the legal holders. In Texas, there has been a tiny number (2 or 3?) actual indictments in the 7 years I've been a CCW holder. Not exactly a wild-west festival of gory blood as the anti-gun crowd would have had you believe was going to happen before the CCW law was enacted.

Texas has just extended the Castle (sp?) laws to include cars. So now, apparently, it's legal for any legal gun owner to carry a loaded weapon in the car, within reach, regardless of trip destination.

I've never had to use or even brandish any of my several weapons. But like seat belts and any kind of insurance, I hope I never have to.

End of sermon,

Or, if some of us citizens might be so audacious as to have a Concealed
carry permit. The police should obviously know when approaching a car with
one of *those* people at the helm.

I can see it now, I roll thru a stop sign at some deserted intersection at
2am - being able to see for miles I don;t come to a "full and complete
stop" - blue lights instantly light up the night, a few seconds pass as my
license plate is entered into a computer, electronic bits warmup, unseen
things fly between the police car and a satillite thousands of miles away
and back again - next thing I know 2 officers are approaching my car with
guns drawn and demanding I exit the car and lay on the ground where I'm
handcuffed, lifted up then laid over the hood of my car.

for rolling thru a stop sign in a wide open area with nothing coming for
miles around. On another subject, I was almost hit last night when I
pulled out of our sub-division last night - unknown to me a small pickup was
coming over the hill toward the intersection with only parking lights on -
it was a black pickup BTW - amd I didn;t know he was there until I was out
on the higheay and looked to see him on my bumper - still with only parking
lights on. And then I see a car approaching in the other lane without *any*
headlights - could barely see him at all. Must have been saving his lights
for another time. It was well after dark with all other vehicles having
lights on. *That* is what police should be going after.

Oh well, have a nice week -

One more thing about this new creation from India. It might liven up the
debate in the Michigan Republican Primary as the epitome of "outsourcing".
Of
course the "Detroit Big Three" could just each purchase a variant of this
pseudo-car licensed from TATA and then push them out to increase their
CAFE fleet
ratings.

And there is one added "feature" that we all, perhaps, have missed. When
the
new Federally approved, anti-terrorist National Identification Card (aka
the
new, Patriot Act Conforming Driver's License document that we all will
soon
be compelled to obtain) is issued and the government then figures out
that by
a coding in the strip on the back of the license document that they can
record the identification, CAFE score, etc., of each individual
automobile that we
drive (we won't even mention adding to the coding when one purchases a
firearm, but of course this would just be for police officer safety as he
could
put the license into his card reader and learn if you own any firearms
that
