That's one of the most accurate statements made!! It's true of most anything
(sadly) but especially so for brake calipers which are simple and merely like a
clean work space with lots of inexpensive brake fluid to clean and flush the trash out.
There's a few things like alternators or starters that require special tools to align or
machine some parts but calipers are ideal candidates for home shop rebuilding. They
are easy to disassemble and the parts not included in the rebuild are typically o-rings
usually available at NAPA at similar FLAPS.
Of course, I've seen amateurs screw up a pad replacement because they failed to
think the job thru. ;-)

With all due respect, have you ever taken a brake caliper apart?
It is probably one of simplest things on a car. A typical two piston caliper has two o-rings, two inner seals (just a large square o-ring), and two outer dust seals.
I feel I can do as good a job (if not better) rebuilding them myself vs buying rebuilt calipers.
That said, I do only use original seals (IOW a genuine ate kit for an ate caliper).

My point, Jeff, was not that re-using a product is bad but rather, that the amateur rebuilder who is seeing the inside of a caliper for the first time, may miss the proper steps that you obviously follow, and wash the rings down with paint thinner and toss them back on the workbench until reassembly time.
Many things we do on our cars may cause "inconveniences" caused by our ignorance. Other things may result in death from the same causes.

I've rebuilt 100s of ATE calipers over the last 20+ years, and have never had a problem.
I do leave the o-rings immersed in brake fluid when removed so they don't dry out.
