Larry,

I read once that many of the prototype and test mule Vettes were crushes due
to how they were registered, as prototypes, allowing them to be exempt from
certain things, and later, used as a tax credit.  The worry that they would
end up in the hands of collectors or on the road one day was also a concern
GM would be liable should anything go wrong.  I think the prototype and test
mule Ford GTs were also crushed, as some were for evaluation, and didn't
have such things as air bags and other required items that production cars
would have.
