Re: Cam timing

Well, my 308 marks are spot on, and so are my 355 marks. I'm wondering if
the people who have found them to be 'out' didn't check the cam timing
properly rather than the marks being at fault......and if some of the
mechanics who claim it's essential have found a nice little money spinner
for them.

3 quite experienced ferrari mechanics I've asked here in Aus have told me
they've never seen a car with timing marks that were wrong. Surely by the
time the 355s were made machining was accurate enough that the marks should
be spot on, and I've been told that with older cars the marks were made
manually by the engine builder when he dialled the cams in.

That why I asked if anyone ON HERE (I read fchat) has found marks to
actually be wrong. To me it makes sense that they should always be spot on,
but then, I stopped being surprised about Ferraris long ago.

That's interesting.....my car has very noticeable marks that are dead
on.....
I figured that the first motors (mine is 0058) were carefully put together
with the marks and all........

My car is currently in for a belt change. The mechanic ask me if I wanted
him to degree the cams and make a reference mark for future use. He said
that there wasn't anything of "real use" on the cams in the early years.
He's charging me an extra 3 hours for this.

need to degree your cams to check for accuracy if you feel they are off.
There are some great threads written about this process.
